About this position: 

Our client is a sector leading Designer, Manufacturer & install of Modular Precast Concrete Infrastructure solutions. Focused on enhancing their market position in the rapidly growing UK & Irish markets for the demand of high-quality engineer products manufactured both on & off-site they wish to appoint a Design Manager based at their head office in County Carlow. The ideal candidate will be a chartered Engineer and have expertise to match their strategy around the offsite manufacture of housing & associated concrete solutions. 

The Role: 

Key Responsibilities:


  • Reporting into the Managing Director and part of the senior management team the Design Manager will be responsible for providing overall engineering leadership & direction including innovation & strategy
  • Ensuring efficient and effective engineering and innovation performance shaping the technical strategy of the Company
  • Lead the Design Department and directly assist on all strategic and tactical matters as they relate to design, engineering, and innovation.


Drive improvements to:


  • Ensuring consistent and appropriate quality & efficiency of design for opportunities tendered.
  • Development of best practice for Design & Detailing department (building on significant “catalogue” of successful reference projects).
  • Management of innovation for new products and improvement of existing products and processes.
  • Support the technical management of relationships with key customers, suppliers, and JV partners maintaining the highest standards of health & safety in both factory and site-based activities and processes.



Areas of responsibility include:


Design & Detailing

  • Management of Design & Detailing team
  • Identifying and Promoting optimum approach on design solutions and design strategies
  • Review of Design team output (Proposals, Approval and Production Drawings)
  • Value Engineering and Proposal Optimisation
  • Configuring schemes for maximum competitiveness, undertaking technical and feasibility studies including foundation support approaches.
  • Development and succession planning
  • Engaging at an early stage with client engineering teams


Innovation Strategy and Planning

  • Innovating, Optioneering, Challenging, Testing - Rethinking what we do and how we do it
  • Resolving inefficiencies and proposing alternative practices as they arise including manufacturing methods
  • Innovation strategy and R&D tax credit methodology and practices


Risk Management / Technical Persuasion

  • Preparing arguments on contentious technical or contractual matters
  • Offsite work inspecting/defending/solving

Business Development / Opportunities

  • Finding new business opportunities both local and global
  • Maximising the efficiencies of our manufacturing plant and identifying the right mix of products as part of that process
  • Preparing arguments on contentious technical or contractual matters
  • Technical Presentations
  • External, internal and factory tours


Production Planning & Techniques

  • Observing and reporting on craftsmanship and haz-ops in production.
  • System improvement opportunities etc.


Health & Safety

  • Commitment to the Work Safe Home Safe strategy


Grants, R&D Tax Credits

  • Manage grant / R&D Tax Credit application processes to ensure compliance with requirements of relevant grant aiding authorities
The Person: 
  • Qualified Structural Engineer with Charted status and in-depth experience in the manufacturing or construction sector and in particular with reinforced concrete solutions.
  • The successful candidate will be an independent person, team focused and someone who has the ability to provide both coaching and mentoring to the Design & Detailing Team.
  • Self-motivated individual who has extensive industry experience and strong commercial awareness.
  • Experience of working, managing, influencing, and building relationships at all levels of a business.
  • Good interpersonal, problem solving, analytical and two-way communication skills.
  • Ability to use initiative and get things done without direct line authority, to exercise personal influence, resolve conflict, and bring about required behaviours.
  • Capability to proactively seek feedback on self; recognize own capabilities and take initiative to continually improve.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability and the capability to develop team members in support of individual career goals and team objectives.
